What is kitesurfing?
Kitesurfing is a watersport where participants use a kite and a board to harness the wind's power to glide (or jump) across the water's surface.
As kitesurfing has origins in so many other water sports, bringing together techniques used in snowboarding, wakeboarding, windsurfing and skateboarding. In other words, balance and core strength are key. If you're an advanced kitesurfer, you can perform aerial tricks like jumps, flips and kite loops.
A kitesurfing holiday is an amazing way to embrace the sea, so why not add it to your list of adventures to tackle?
Learn to kitesurf on holiday
On our beginner kitesurfing holidays, you'll start by learning to fly the kite while on the beach, getting used to the motio so you can control where you're going onve you're on the water.
You'll also learn how to launch and land the kite, while experiencing a technique called 'body dragging' (basically kitesurfing without the board - it's a lot of fun). Finally, you'll bring the board and kite together on the water. From the moment you launch your first kite and skim across the water, you'll be hooked.
Why choose a Kitesurfing holiday in Sardinia?
Take a holiday to Baia dei Mori Beach Club in Sardinia. The conditions here are ideal thanks to the consistent wind. Then there's the beauty of the beaches themselves, characterised by golden sands and the bright blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
If the conditions are right, you can book an intro to kitesurfing session with Kite Gym, one of the local kitesurfing schools. They teach at La Cinta kite beach, close to San Teodoro (around a 25-minute drive away). One of the Neilson team will be on hand to help you make arrangements, but as this is not a Neilson activity, it is subject to availability and is very much wind-dependent (minimum age is 16 years). If you can already kitesurf and plan to go it alone, you'll need to be qualified to IKO or BKSA level 2 or 3 (safety cover can be organised locally).
When is the best time to do a kitesurfing holiday?
Typically, June, July and August are the best months for our kitesurfing holidays in Sardinia, as the wind conditions are just right. The weather is sure to be brilliant too! Temperatures reach just over 30°C, so it's important to stay hydrated, wear sun protection and take regular breaks throughout your kitesurfing holiday.
Do you offer family kitesurfing holidays?
While kitesurfing can be viewed as an advanced watersport, that doesn't mean it's off-limits for families with older kids wanting to learn to kitesurf on holiday. Under the correct supervision, you can have a go safely and develop your confidence with an instructor.
If you plan to enrol at the Kite Gym in Sardinia, please note that the minimum age is 16 years.
Do you need to be fit for a kitesurfing holiday?
Like with any of our activity holidays, how hard you go is up to you. You can get out on the water every day if you wish, or you can mix it up with sunbathing. It's important to take things at your own pace. You can check out the schedule when you enquire about the kitesurfing courses in Sardinia.
While you don't necessarily need to be ultra-fit to kitesurf, having a good level of fitness is certainly helpful. It takes core strength and coordination to keep your balance and get the most out of the sport. Having mental resilience, particularly if you're embarking on a beginner kitesurfing holiday, will be just as important while you get to grips with it.
What kind of kit will I be using in my kitesurfing holiday?
You'll come across the following terminology as you learn to kitesurf:
- Kite and bridle
- Board (directional or bi-directional) and foot straps
- Chicken loop, harness and control bar
- Lines (generally four or five of them) and safety release system
Most kitesurfers also wear a life jacket, water shoes, wet suits, and helmets for safety and comfort purposes.
How can I get the most from my kitesurfing holiday?
If you're considering a kitesurfing holiday with little to no experience, we strongly recommend enquiring about the lessons on offer in Sardinia.
Building up your confidence in the water is a good place to start – so is having an open mind. A little research won't hurt either; there are plenty of videos you can watch online to pick up tips.
