Cycling on holiday is not only an excellent way to kick back, it’s also one of the best ways to explore, allowing you to take in the landscape at the perfect pace. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely pedal through sunny olive groves or a lung-busting climb to a magnificent viewpoint, sightseeing is at its best on two wheels.
Planning a cycling holiday in Europe but not sure where to go?
Whether you’re a devoted roadie, an adrenaline-seeking mountain biker or someone who just fancies giving it a try, our cycle team has chosen their five favourite biking locations for 2019 just for you.
Lefkada, Greece
The beautiful Greek island of Lefkada may be known as the ‘Caribbean of Greece’ but it’s the rugged inland mountains that make it such a hit with cyclists. From steep forested peaks to rolling hills dotted with rural villages, the choice of trails here offers something for all abilities. Choose a gentle road ride along the coast, cooling off on secluded beaches along the way, or challenge yourself with some of the more technical riding to be found in Lefkada’s dramatic interior.
‘The White Church’ is one such challenge - a full-day mountain biking epic to one of the island’s highest points: the hilltop Chapel of Saint Ilias. The route snakes up to a lofty 1158m, taking in fragrant orange groves, sheer cliffs and remote villages along the way. It’s definitely not a climb for the fainthearted, but the panoramic views out across the Ionian Sea and the unforgettable descent down ‘Spider Alley’ make it more than worth all that effort.
Our Cosmos Beachclub in Vassiliki, to the south of the island, makes a fantastic base for exploring the best Lefkada cycle routes. You’ll find a wide choice of rides on your doorstep with everything from scenic coastal roads to sweeping singletrack.
Sardinia
The Italian island of Sardinia boasts some of the Mediterranean’s most interesting cycling. Its wild landscape is packed with memorable rides, catering mainly to cyclists with some experience. Don’t worry if you’re new to the sport however, there are some great routes for beginners and families as well.
The 50km ‘Posada Adventure’ showcases exactly why Sardinia is so renowned for its road cycling. The beauty of cycling on an island of this size is the chance to take in a variety of landscapes in one day – and this route certainly does that. Winding its way past mountain villages, the deep waters of Lake Posada and an impressive hilltop castle, this spectacular stretch of the smoothest road imaginable is the stuff of cycling dreams.
Baia dei Mori Beachclub, on Sardinia’s north-eastern coast, is ideally placed for a sunshine cycle break. You’ll enjoy easy access to the natural beauty of the interior, as well as our gorgeous beach to relax on after your ride.
Peloponnese peninsula, southern Greece
This stunning peninsula on mainland Greece is home to a vast selection of trails spanning everything from novice beachfront rides to the most daring mountain bike descents. This part of Greece may not be one of the best-known cycling holiday destinations, but that’s one of the reasons we love it. Think unspoilt beauty, quiet sandy beaches and views of the Taygetus mountains.
The crowd-pleasing ‘Secret Petalidi’ route suits most abilities. With little in the way of climbing, this is a great choice for a relaxing day’s riding in the unspoilt Greek countryside. Explore the traditional town of Petalidi, before making your way back along the coast, past perfect white beaches and picturesque harbours.
If this special part of Greece appeals, the Neilson Messini Beachclub puts you at the heart of peninsula.
Calabria, southern Italy
Head down to the arch of Italy’s famous boot to experience some of our favourite road riding. Cycling is huge in Italy and with such jaw-dropping scenery to discover, it’s no wonder. This sun-drenched region is one of our most popular cycling destinations, thanks to its quiet roads and glorious countryside. From beaches lapped by the waves of the Ionian Sea to plunging rocky ravines, expect to encounter photo op after photo op as you pedal.
Experienced road riders can take on the winding switchbacks of one of the region’s most breathtaking sights: the Gorges of Raganello. Situated at the edge of the Pollino National Park, the 50km route starts in Sibari and includes an intrepid river crossing over the cobbled Ponte del Diavolo – or Devil’s Bridge. If you’re not blessed with a head for heights, we suggest you don’t look down!
For a taste of the original ‘dolce vita’, the Airone Beachclub with its pine-fringed beaches is a tranquil spot to unwind after a hard day on the road.
The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
With steep coastal mountains plummeting down to meet the blue-green waters of the Adriatic, the Dalmatian Coast is a real feast for the eyes. And the pedalling’s not bad either with many routes circling the forested fringes of the majestic Paklenica National Park.
The majority of rides are best suited to beginners and intermediates, making this is a great place to fall in love with biking. Take the ‘Gorges and Shores’ route – in just 14km, you’ll be treated to beachfront singletrack, historic Venetian ruins and the mountains, caves and canyons of Paklenica.
Sitting pretty between the waves and the peaks is our newly refurbished Alana Beachclub. With everything from rooftop cocktails to fresh new contemporary rooms and cabins, it’s a lovely spot off the beaten track.
