If you love the water, you’re going to love Italy. With a long coastline lapped by the Mediterranean, Ionian and Adriatic seas, Italy is a brilliant destination for epic watersports.
It’s no secret that Italians love messing about on the water – especially on speedboats, sailing yachts and kayaks. The year-round sunshine and a gorgeous climate lend itself to water-based activities. Think sweeping coastlines that hide beautiful gulfs, secret bays, and quaint fishing villages. Plus, Italy has over 100 blue flags for the cleanest and most equipped beaches.
Our Airone Beachclub is brand new this year, so you can see why we’re totally besotted! Here are just a few of our findings from our first few months of Italian watersports.
Wind and weather in Italy
You’ll be pleased to know that both the sun and breeze are kind to those that navigate the Italian shores. That said, it’s good to know the characteristics of the Italian weather systems, so you can plan your holiday activities properly. It’s good to know that if the wind is blowing you can go windsurfing, or if the sea’s calm you can get on a paddle board.
Luckily for us, sailors and windsurfers can enjoy Italy’s south coast for 10 months of the year, due to ideal wind conditions. This region enjoys varying wind directions and strengths for each season, offering water sports variety throughout the year. Where we’re based, in Sibari, our quiet bay generally results in a calm training breeze in the morning, which builds to perfect sailing and windsurfing conditions after lunch. Thanks to the protected nature of our bay, we’re used to calm seas, with very occasional short chop.
The weather in Italy can vary from north to south, especially on the mountain ranges and coastlines. The climate is harsher in the north, with very cold winters and hot, humid summers. In the centre of Italy, you’ll find that the climate is milder with more consistent temperatures, plus the summers are longer here. In the south, where we’re based, there’s a Mediterranean climate which means mild winters and an increase in temperatures during the spring and summer seasons, which lead into autumn.
The average temperatures in Italy also vary depending on where you are; in the north, the temperature can drop to a cool 8°C, with the summer heat reaching to 21°C. Meanwhile, in the south the temperature remains around 11°C in December and January, soaring to over 30°C in August. Therefore, it’s best to plan your watersports holiday for the summer months, although early and late season can provide some fantastic sailing.
Italy's sea temperatures
Like with the weather, Italy’s sea temperatures differ depending on where you are. Surprisingly, the warmest waters are in the northeast of Italy, where the average temperature is 24°C. The coolest sea is on the Adriatic coast, where the water is a goose-pimply 18°C.
But don’t fear, in spring and summer the average sea temperature in Italy is 22°C. If you’re keen to take a dip, the best time to test the waters is between June and October when temperatures reach 23°C, especially in southern Italy. During July and August, the sea water jumps up to a toasty 26°C.
If you’re coming to stay with us in the early season, we might recommend a shortie wetsuit or a thermal rash vest, but the water certainly won’t be England-cold, so don’t worry too much.
Italy's range of watersports
There is nothing better than jumping on the water at your own pace. Whether you’re aboard a boat, using the sails to direct you or it’s just you and a paddle, you can discover the Italian waters at your leisure. When you go on a Neilson watersports holiday to Italy, you can take your pick from; dinghy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.
And the best bit is, these activities are great for all levels of fitness. Whether you’re super competitive, or like to take it easy, you can go at your own pace.
Kayaking can either be done solo or with another paddler, depending on the type of boat you choose. With your double paddle you are in charge of direction and speed. Stand up paddle boarding is also a great water-based sport which can take up to two people at a time. Using a propulsion paddle, you can not only float on the sea, but use your board as a platform for Pilates and yoga if you really get into the Neilson spirit!
Experience the feeling of freedom when you try dinghy sailing. With the help of your instructor and the wind, you’ll sail along the shores of Italy and maybe even take part in a race. For a wilder water experience, windsurfing has an edge. Not only does it work out your core muscles, this brilliant sport allows you to have the sun on your face and wind in your hair. The thrill of blasting along the sea is incomparable.
