Mayrhofen is a popular resort with the British thanks to some fantastic night-life and the superb skiing and snowboarding to be had. The Zillertal Superski pass covers four ski areas linking an incredible 515km of pistes and includes the 3244m Hintertux Glacier: Austria's only year round ski resort.
Most of the 109 local slopes are above the tree line so they're pretty snow-sure and the views over the Zillertal mountains are stunning. There's a great range of runs that ideally suit improvers and intermediates.
The ski school is award-winning so beginner skiers or boarders will get more confident in no time. If you book Neilson Chalet Hotel Ferienhof, those confident on blue and red runs will get free guiding and coaching from our fully qualified Neilson Mountain Experts.
You can also boost your skills off-piste by booking a guide or private tuition. And when two of you pre-book any tuition, one child aged four to 12 can get theirs for free.

On the mountain
Mayrhofen has a well-deserved reputation amongst skiers and boarders for its immense, snow-sure ski area and fantastic après-ski, both on and off the mountain!
Most people head up to the Penken area which is quickly accessed by an ultra-modern high speed gondola. This area includes one of Europe’s best snowpark for freestylers, the ‘Penken Park’.
The other main mountain is Ahorn mountain, with its famous ‘White Lounge’ ice bar and igloo hotel. The Zillertal Superski pass covers an incredible 515kms including the 3244m Hintertux glacier.
The wider ski area covered on your ski pass includes Kaltenbach, a hidden jewel of a valley with lovely wide blue and red runs. You can also get to Zell am Ziller which has 220km of mainly tree-lined pistes across three mountains.
Ski & board tuition
We use Ski School SMT in Mayrhofen as they provide excellent, English-speaking tuition for skiers and boarders. Both adults and kids are taught on Penken mountain making it ideal for families wanting to stay in touch throughout the day.
They also offer lunch for kids for around €13 per child, per day. You can book this in resort with the school on the first day.

Off the mountain
Mayrhofen is buzzing and lively. Après-ski starts early and goes on until late. There’s a huge choice of bars and clubs if that’s your thing. For a difference, take a guided tour to the wonderful world beneath the slopes and discover a glacial crevasse with incredible ice stalactites, giant sparkling ice crystals, frozen waterfalls and even a glacial lake.
The resort hosts some big international events too which draw huge crowds, including Snowbombing, a music festival that takes place in different venues and hotels across the resort. It's a week-long whirlwind of skiing, boarding, DJs and bands. Great for couples and groups but we don't recommend it for families.

Don't miss...
The White Lounge ice bar and Igloo Hotel. It’s the coolest après-ski venue around (it is made of ice after all) and a great choice for a laid back afternoon in the sun. You'll find it near the top of the Ahorn cable-car station.
For the seriously experienced only, try Austria's steepest slope, the Harakiri Run. With an average gradient of 78 degrees, it's no wonder there's a t-shirt that says 'I survived Harikiri'!
If you want to have a go at freestyle, definitely head to the Penken Park. It is one of the biggest snowparks in Europe with six different lines to suit all levels of rider, a 130m super-pipe and there's no shortage of pros to show you how it should be done.
