Livigno in Italy is tucked away on the Swiss border with its own micro-climate and tax-free status. It's a charming, traditional alpine village with a friendly, cosmopolitan vibe that's still a bit of a secret, so plan your visit before the secret gets out.
Intermediate skiers will love the great number of blue and red runs scattered all across both sides of the valley. Beginners will be just as happy thanks to the excellent English speaking ski schools.
On top of that, the pedestrian centre consists of three kilometres of bars, restaurants and duty-free shops for when you're not carving up the slopes.
Try Marcos and Daphne’s pub for a pint of Guinness, or dance the night away in one of the resort's nightclubs. And of course there’s that duty-free shopping - you'll definitely want to leave some space in your suitcase on the way out.
115km may not sound like a big area, but you won't be disappointed. Livigno is split into two separate ski areas on either side of the valley. The ski and snowboard school is award-winning and beginners will start out on the gentle nursery slopes at the base of the Carosello area.
Improvers will relish the endless wide cruising reds and blues, not to mention the lovely little refugios; perfect for lunchtime stops. Advanced levels will want to check out the slopes of Monte Della Neve to really push themselves or try the massive and accessible freeride areas. Freestylers will love the Mottolino Snow Park; it's enormous!
Mottolino mountain has two new lifts (a six-person chair and a J-Bar) as well as a new ski school beginner area and even a friendly, white, fury mascot for kids to give high fives to.

The après scene here is really lively with something to suit all tastes. Eating out is a pleasure thanks to the abundance of restaurants. There's over 100 bars, so whether you want a quiet night chatting over a bottle of Italian red or dancing in your ski boots until the early hours, there's something for you.
For laid-back and low key, try the aperitivo bars. On the other end of the spectrum are the live music venues and pubs like Marco's Bar (legendary).

The duty-free shopping is almost as endless as the nightlife. Livigno has loads of it on offer, all along a gorgeous pedestrian shopping area. Stroll, shop, eat, repeat.
Biking on snow sounds silly, but fat biking is the way to do it. Take to the 20km of groomed trails on a mountain bike with some seriously fat, low pressure tyres. They're designed to make it easy to see the resort from a different point of view.
